Leaving a Harley Davidson outside?
I’m considering buying a Harley Davidson this spring but currently live at an apartment complex with no garage. I have the option of renting a garage on site for the summer, however it is costly and not close to my actual apartment. I also could put the bike in my Grandparents garage a few miles away but I’m thinking there will be many times where I’m going to just want to get on the bike and ride without having to plan it out.
I’m open to paying money or storing it a few miles away but am wondering how bad it would be to buy a nice cover and leave it out in the parking lot? I’m hearing its not a good idea, just wanted to get others thoughts who have had more experience. Also, how risky is it that someone would try and take the bike? I live in a good area but I’m still concerned.Thanks.
Its not a good idea at all. The weather is bad for it, vandalism, theft, etc… If your going to buy a Harley then make sure you have a place to put it.

Covering does not hide from low-life who spot the bike in transit. No locks last more than 5 minutes if the thieves are pro’s, including ground anchor devices. No neighbours ever see anything when you want them to.
HD is probably the most stolen bike in the World.
Consider the grandparent solution or you won’t get any sleep.

Not a good idea to leave it outside. Insurance will be higher as it is not garaged. Not only can the bike be stolen but it would be exposed to vandalism and being stripped. Kids and young teenagers would jump all over it when not protected it would be like kids in a sweet shop.
Best advice is to garage it .

I ride with a guy who’s Harley Road King had to sit outside during the Colorado winters. He claims the bike suffered no ill effects. I would have to at least add he was fastidious about keeping it protected by cleaning and waxing it.

Best save up for a house. Now is a prime time to be a buyer. People who live in apartments should have other priorities than an expensive piece of butt jewelry. Just sayin’.

You can buy a far better bike from one of the big 4 Japanese manufacturers, spend half as much and use the money you saved for a shotgun and a rottweiler… problem solved. Probably even have enough leftover for a good helmet camera so you can document yourself passing all the Harleys on the road.

Harleys are not very good motorcycles. The suck in alot of ways. One of these ways is that they attract a bad element. Stupid people with low morals who will target your bike to seal parts from or steal outright. Buy a real bike instead of an underclass status symbol and you won’t have this problem.

How do you measure risk? And how much risk do you wish to assume? What if I were to say that the risk is 12.2? 166.333?
The problem is that a bike which is always parked in the same place becomes a target: Thieves can plan ahead if the bike is often in the same location. All it takes is a truck and some strong men, and it’s gone in no time.
Add to that the fact that H-D parts are almost universal in application: A doohickey from Model A also fits Models B, C, D,…X.

A cover will protect it from the envirement to a certain extent but it definitly will not protect it from a thief.Trust me thieves do not avoid nice neighborhoods.
